How an Ice Dam Forms
Heat escaping through the attic melts the underside of the snowpack. Meltwater runs down until it crosses the cold overhang at the eave and refreezes into a ridge. The ridge ponds water behind it, and standing water works under shingles and into walls. It's a roof-heat problem that presents at the gutter line.
What Gutters Do and Don't Cause

But clogged gutters make winters worse: trapped wet debris freezes into a block that seeds the ridge early, holds meltwater against fascia, and the expanding ice pulls runs off the house. The best gutter-side prevention is a real post-drop fall cleaning, done after the oaks finish in mid-November, before sustained freezing.
